Book Chapters

“1964 and the State of the City,” in Arthur Molella and Scott Knowles, eds., World’s Fairs in the Cold War (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2019).

  • My chapter, “1964 and the State of the City,” discusses how the 1964 World's Fair contained rumblings of urban conflict in New York City about racism and urban renewal.

“The 1939 World’s Fair,” “The 1964 World’s Fair,” and several other entries in Andrew Smith, ed. Savoring Gotham: A Food Lover’s Companion to New York City (New York: Oxford University Press, 2015).

  • I contributed ten essays to this collection, including pieces on food at both New York World's Fairs, Halvah, Balducci's, Gristedes, and Queens.

“Plump, Moist, and a Bit of a Chump: Facing the Future with Elmer at the 1939 World’s Fair,” in Meet Me at the Fair: A World’s Fair Reader (Pittsburgh: ETC Press, 2013).

  • My essay, “Plump, Moist, and a Bit of a Chump: Facing the Future with Elmer at the 1939 World’s Fair,” talked about the 1939 World's Fair mascot, Elmer, and how he was a device to assuage fears about modernity and technology and part of the fair's Americanist turn during its second season, when war was breaking out in Europe.
